History and Legend

In the last century, Cantiano Black Cherries were highly prized also by the Italian royal family. An original document from 1928 states that King Vittorio Emanuele II used to order Cantiano Black cherries from an acknowledged local producer.
It is said that Roman military tribune Lucius Licinius Lucullus imported the tree to Italy. After the Third Mithridatic War in 65 B.C., he picked a plant of Black Cherry and planted it in the gardens of his villa in Rome. The spread in our countryside was a fortunate consequence.
